Libraries at universities, especially state schools, are often called upon to handle the management, retention, and disposal of records. Austin Peay recently changed the ownership of the Office of Records Management from the Department of Finance to the Library, and saw an opportunity to utilize the institutional repository as a tool to maintain records. Institutional repository software offers a means for permanent storage, preservation, and access control for records. We will share our experiences and discuss opportunities and pitfalls associated with this system, and the migration itself, with an eye to the future consortial purchase of Digital Commons.
